Why not turn off the water using the existing traditional stopcock?

Often stopcocks are located in difficult to get-to positions.

Old style stopcocks were not designed to operate frequently and to do so can cause water leaks around the wheel valve shaft that can remain undetected for long periods.

If a traditional stopcock has not been used for some time it can become calcified and when used is damaged or inoperable.

LeakSafe make it easy to switch the water on and off.

When should I switch the water off?

Ideally whenever you leave the property. The more frequently the water is turned off the greater the protection for your property and contents.

However, the most critical times to turn the water off are during the winter months and when you are away from the property for extended periods.

WaterSwitch allows you to switch off the water in the same way that you might set the intruder alarm or switch off the lights. The WaterSwitch wireless on/off switch can be located at the most frequently used entry exit point in the house so operating it becomes part of the routine of leaving the property.

I often leave the dishwasher or washing machine running when I leave the property, can I still do this with LeakSafe installed?

LeakSafe’s wireless on/off switch allows you to select a 1, 2 or 3 hour delay when switching the water off to allow appliances to complete their cycle.

How does LeakSafe affect draining down the water system?

It makes it much easier.

Instead of struggling to turn off the existing stopcock use the WaterSwitch to close the valve on the incoming main and drain the system by opening the last tap on the plumbing system.

Where more than one valve is fitted only the valve on the incoming main is closed, the others are left open to effect a full drain down.

How many shut off valves should I have?

As a guide the valve that gives the greatest benefit is the one located on the incoming mains as it stops mains pressure water pouring in through a leak or burst.

The second area to consider is any water storage tanks. A valve located here can prevent the water in the tank escaping through a leak or burst.

What happens if I forget to turn WaterSwitch off when I leave the house?

If the switch is not turned off when leaving the property the valves will remain in the open position.

LeakSafe can supply an extra layer of protection with LeakDetectors to detect leaks in the areas where they are located and automatically close the valve even if it has been left open.

Will turning off the water affect my boiler or any other installation in my property that requires water?

No. All modern boilers are sealed systems that do not require a mains water supply to operate.

LeakSafe offer a property survey service for larger properties that have sophisticated or bespoke water management systems.

What happens is there is a mains power failure?

Leaksafe equipment can be either mains powered or run on batteries.

If your system is mains powered it will also have batteries installed and will run on battery back up during a power failure. There is an optional feature to close the valve automatically on mains power failure.

If your system is battery powered, a mains power failure will have no impact on the running of the system.

I am concerned about batteries becoming flat and losing the protection of the LeakSafe system

The battery life of all components is in excess of 9 months and a low-level battery alarm is included in each system to warn of low battery levels. When this sounds the batteries have approximately 150 operations remaining.

Leaksafe offer a battery reminder service and can email you every 9 months to replace the batteries.

The batteries in our systems are standard sizes and widely available.

LeakSafe systems can be mains powered using a mains power adaptor, and batteries are also installed to act as a back up in the event of a mains power failure.

How will I know that my LeakSafe system is always fully functioning?

We suggest that you occasionally test the system by turning a tap on and then turning the water off using the LeakSafe system. The tap will stop flowing proving that the valve has closed.

If you have installed LeakDetectors we suggest that you occasionally test them by turning a tap on, then wetting the LeakDetector(s). The LeakDetector transmitter will give an audible alarm, the valve will close and the tap will stop flowing.

Will the wireless signal interfere with other wirelessly controlled equipment in my property or that of adjacent properties?

No. LeakSafe utilises wireless protocols that ensure this will not happen.

What is the survey service?

We offer a LeakSafe property survey service that identifies the best LeakSafe system for your property.

Will installing LeakSafe affect my property insurance?

It can, and potentially in a very positive way.

Insurers have experienced huge losses in recent years as a result of water damage in domestic properties, and many are introducing additional excesses for water damage. In some instances insurers will reduce these excesses if a leak prevention system is installed.

Preventing water damage claims can mean retaining your no-claims bonus and avoiding punitive insurance premiums in the future.

LeakSafe work with many of the insurers in the UK and abroad and preferential prices for LeakSafe equipment are available to customers of some of these insurers. Contact your insurance company to see whether you qualify.
